In my opinion, most nightmares can be put into two groups with a few general causes.  However, I am not an expert on nightmares.  Therefore, I hope that others will contribute their opinions, ideas and experiences.

Most of us probably agree that nightmares are either caused by what is inside the dreamer or by what is outside.  To me, this seems reasonable.

I believe that two fairly common causes that are outside of the dreamer are
1.  Medications and drugs that the dreamer has been taking and
2.  Spirits who want to harm the dreamer.  http://www.dreaminterpretationhelp.com/protection_from_malevolent_spirits-t1862.0.html

As for those causes that are within the dreamer,
1.   The conflict between different archetypes is a very common cause of nightmares.
2.   Sometimes the nightmares are actually positive dreams but the dreamer does not know what they mean.  Dreams of snakes, spiders and journeys to the underworld can be this type of dream.  Some kundalini related dreams probably fall into this category.  http://www.dreaminterpretationhelp.com/kundalini_signs_and_symptoms-t1857.0.html
3.   There are also dreams where the unconscious keeps repeating a bad experience of the dreamer.  It might be a case where the dreamer had been abused or attacked in real life.  In these dreams, it is as if the dreamer can not let go of the bad experience and keeps reliving it over and over again.
4.   Spinal injuries are rarely recognized as being a cause of nightmares but it does happen.  I learned this from reading Edgar Cayce.

So, what can be done about these nightmares?  I believe that once the cause has been identified, the dreamer has taken a big step in eliminating or at least understanding these unpleasant dreams.

Hi ya Lugus

another good question, the great thing about such questions like these and replying to them is that I often dont know where im going to go with the reply, but always learn something from it by responding to the best of my ability what comes to me   Wink

The first thing that struck me as I read the list of potential possibilitys that lead us to have a nightmare is, the unifying element fear, is at the root of any nightmare.  Fear seems to be the all pervading aspect of any dream that our minds label negative or nightmarish.  Fear that is triggered by medication I feel is a 'natural' response to taking in something that 'unaturally' alters our biochemistry, our body/mind is naturally stimulated into a fearful response when ingesting anything it deems toxic.

Fear is also a natural consequence to any traumatic experience that has not been released from the body/mind. After any trauma in life, our dreams will tend to help us liberate our fears from the realm of the unconsciousness into a place where we can first begin to reflect objectively albeit in a mostly unconscious way still, of the experiences that have not been released. Our dreams will help us bridge our conscious minds to any fearful feelings we may harbour in a way that is safe to explore. In our current climate/society I feel we have a very unhealthy relationship to fear Ie we have forgotton how to accept such strong body sensations/responses. All feelings of this nature we experience through the body but due to our propensity to be in our heads we cut ourselves of from such overwhelming sensations when we experinece them literally locking the very said experience into our celluar memorys and our energy systems.

To our Egos or programming if you like current society still holds the false belief that fear equates to weakness. This very statement I believe is what creates the chasm between our mind and our ability to experience fear. As we feel that what is uncomfortable for us, we wall ourselves of from the experience, our journey is then in part to recover these aspects of our self that we have disassociated from. The first step of healing oneself from such life events is to begin to ground ones energy again, to start to relate once more to ones body and its experience/sensation. Self acceptance of such bodily feelings will help an individual to feel more connected and not so dis-connected from what they are feeling, its another way of bridging to that which is unconscious, we so often make the mistake that consciousness is all in the head, because thats where we spend so much of our time, but this is a false assumption, our bodys are the true reflection of our consciouness, by releasing our experinencs through our bodys we clear our supressed energetic issues.

A great book has been written on a technique called focusing which helps a person to help clear these surpressed energetic issues - The Power of Focusing: A Practical Guide to Emotional Self-Healing - Ann Weiser Cornell definitely has my thumbs up, is practical and the exercises best done with the aid of another person but can equally be done on ones self as well. Its interesting that you mention the spine as being a cause of nightmares as it is the spine/back that is largley affected through surpressed fear. In chinese medicine the spine relates to the Bladder/kidney, the water element, which is also weakened through fearful states and injuries ie an injury to the spine will weaken the Bladder/Kidney energy leading to fearful states.

Thanks for giving me the oppurtunity to make some of these connections  Smiley

Hi Malakeli

The things that people encounter in their dreams is a source of amazement.  To confront those things that are fearsome is a noteworthy accomplishment both in our dreams and in real-life.  It is easy to say but is difficult to do.

Thank you,

I agree with both of you, and I always thought of nightmares as a chance to grow and learn what's really bothering us.  The thing that struck me was that Lugus said some are caused by spirits. How can they really harm us in our sleep? Do they do anything other than scare us out of our wits? I've had some scary dreams, and when they involve spirits I can definatley tell the difference between dreams caused by anxiety and dreams caused by a spirit that's there to cause you great distress.
I will share this story with you that I found really rung true to me,,,,
My friend C. who was living in Africa at the time experienced this.  She said one night she went to bed, and there was nothing she could do, she just felt very restless and uncomfortable. She was in like a hostel type building in a village.  All the windows open as it was so hot outside.  She was feeling chills, and her heart kept racing and nothing she could think of would explain why she felt so odd.  She could hear some noises outside the window, but just assumed it was animals walking around.  Eventually she fell asleep and had terrible nightmares all night.  The funny thing was the next day, everyone in the compound had experienced the same thing.  This was about 30 years ago.  Everyone described the same thing she had felt, she heard them all talking at breakfast.  The people who were native to the area just explained it to her.  They said there was a bad spirit walking around all night bothering everyone, and that it was a restless spirit. She was taken aback at the matter of factness that everyone had experienced the same thing, and that they just 'knew' that this was the case.  Apparently when this happens they do something after to prevent it from returning, some sort of protection prayer or ritual type thing.  Some of them even believe these spirits can kill people or take them from there beds. I don't believe that but that's what they said. Very scary, but it's a true story.  Isn't it strange, makes you think though, that there must be something to it for them all to believe it.

Hey Lugus got to agree with you there "easy to say but ...." From my own experience it seems healing comes at appropriate times its like I learn in stages, for some time I feel like im stumbling through the dark clutching at things and then I gain insight into or release specific emotional tendencys that I had up until then been unaware of a little like chipping away at the old block. What works for me i'm sure does not work for all (we all have our own way of doing things) but holding a light filled space with intention plus an equal mix of faith seems to get things moving. Simple exercises like tuning into your body each day for half an hour or more brings about great changes, just noticing the way we feel different sensations through our body gives us an inroad into our feeling states. Like I mentioned before so many of us are cut of from our feeling states that we are no longer in our bodys and dwell only in mind, that safe place where we can not feel any hurt or unexpressed pain.  Developing body awareness requires that we just sit and listen or rather observe the physical feelings we experience with out judgment or comment, difficultys encountered initially, with practice and a caring attitude to oneself, start to dissipate.

There are so many great ways to develop body awareness, Yoga Nidra a type of meditation can be listened too on a CD where one is prompted to follow a rotation of awareness throughout their body. This coupled with body work therapys, Massage, Shiatsu, Yoga, Lomi Lomi and breath work can help bring a person more into their bodys on a regular basis if grounding is an issue for the individual. The body is not only an in-road to our feeling states its also a bridge to the unconscious and various aspects of bodywork with intent, helps one to release surpressed energetic issues. As we release them we start to feel lighter in self its like the stuck energy actually weighs us down. So the 'doing' of this is actually in the non doing its allowing ourselves to experience our body and release our feelings. For me a lot of the time I release through the breath ie as I go into my body I sense whats present, sensations/twitches/aches, how is my breathing is it rapid, weak, slow? How is my heart rate thumping/fluttery/relaxed how are my facial mucsels are they down are they tense are they up our facial muscles can tell us so much about our real expression and how we feel inside noticing them can give one real insight into whats going on  at any one moment, after x amount of time of focused work I may connect with a feeling that is giving rise to all these sensations/muscle tensions, how we hold ourselves is also a great way to connect into our feelings. Its usually at this point that there may be an air of being uncomfortable as the unconscious state percolates through into awareness, still going within with an attirude of self caring like observeing maybe an animal for the first time or a flower and noticing its colour how it looks, breaths,  I would ask myself what do I need right now to release this feeling, for me (and because this is just my tendency I block through shortening my breath) I find myself just beginning to breath again and connect with my bodily state releasing it on the breath, (how I would of naturally let it go in the first place) had I of not supressed it.

This is essentially the focusing technique I mentioned in the first post and a great way to get things moving, to move through such energy issues if ever feeling stuck or blocked.       Smiley

Hi Ya Geehutch

When I hear storys like these I find it so easy to indulge my fears in the unseen or unknown. The thought I hold is that all is a manifestation of the one, that which we percieve as bad or negative is merely a judgement on a particular vibrational existence. On reading of your friends experience I was wandering if this was some group karmic lesson in which
they experienced so as to learn from. As with all lessons we can choose to respond out of love or out of fear.
We may attract a disembodied spirit into our lives for a number of reasons often it is because they see our light and thus we become for them a possible channel or conduit to aid their return to the light. The presence of such spirits particularly with a denser vibration maybe due to holding pain in their astral form from their human existence.

In addition those spirits that we come accross we may attract due to holding some similar vibration in our own astral body, Like attracts Like when we evaluate our experience we can actually see the lesson in the percieved situation as a gift. Beings that have moved through a lot of their karma and hold a space of light for example the Dalia Lama are unlikely to be affected by the presence of the more denser vibrations of fear, what comes into the light disolves in the light. I believe the best protection one can afford is to keep a space of Love and Light whilst asleep Smiley

Thanks Malakeli, that was very informative and helpful.
I do understand what you are saying, and I know like attracts like.  I do see that spirits who are stuck in their own negativity have a lower energy vibrational pattern, I just didn't see it as a 'dense' energy before.
That was very helpful in understanding more deeply the way they exist, thanks.
I have been told that we are the ones that manifest these darker entities, that they take form from our subconsious, this has a ring of truth to it? Maybe.  So perhaps some come from ourselves, like an external manifestation of our suppressed fears, and some are just disembodied spirits???
I do like to think that darkness dissolves in the light, that's a really good way to think of it.

Hi Ya Geehutch

I totally agree from what I understand and im ceratinly no expert in this field, the entities of which you speak that take form from our subconscious are usually called thoughtforms of our own making and for those who feel they are being psychically attacked are actually just experiencing their own thought forms.

The term 'entity' is usually a term given to astral fragments that have no consciousness of their own, when we die the astral and mental bodys usually break up, fragments from the astral body however may linger in the astral plane and its these fragments that may become attched to us if we are open by that I mean vulneralbly open (holes in our auric field). The 'entitys' then feed of our own energy people experiencing this may experience emotions or cravings they have not experienced before, feel unusual or odd and feel depleted.

Disembodied spirits is a term that refers to those who have passed over and do have a consciouness, but are however still attached to the earth plane, which maybe for a number of reasons, inability to let go, need to still feed an addiction etc. There are certain therapists who specialise specifically in 'spirit release' a process in which the healer aids the person back to the light. One example of this is from someone I know who was doing a tour of the rocks in sydney one evening (she is also a light worker Smiley ) as we were walking past an old dwelling on the harbour front she felt someone pulling on her, tuning in she was was confronted by a woman who was in much pain and grief and was clearly stuck, asking what she needed, she had apparently been married with a son of 11 years old whom whlist alive worked on a fishing boat. One day her husband and son had gone out and never returned. She was so consumed that her attachment had kept her bound to the earth plane where she was still awaiting for their return. It is these strong attachments of a grosser kind that can hinder a person from moving on. My friend then with the aid of spirit helpers guided her towards the light. This experience also impacted on her after which she cryed for some time.

There are many at this time who are working in this way if your interested in this type of work thre is a foundation here in the UK called the spirit release foundation.  Smiley

I will check it out, thanks.
Just a question to you or whoever, do you get the feeling that all the light workers, spirit workers, spirit release workers, healers, channellers, psychics, dream interpreters, psychologists and such, intuitives, medical intuitives, exorcism practionners and all that goes along with all those all are the same/connected?.  They all have the same end result, which is awareness and connection and thus heals ourselves. It's all self work? Perhaps someone could elaborate what I'm trying to say better.

This thought arose when last night I was with my meditation/channelling group, and I spotted a spirit that was stuck next to one of the ladies in front of me.  This spirit was a young girl, nothing scary. I could see her just faintly.  I called it to the ladies attention that this girl wanted to be recognised and led to the light.  I relayed the message that she was stuck in the trapdoor, what ever that meant I didn't know, that was just the message I got.  After that the lady, E. , proceeded to tell the girl to go to the light and with all our combined energies, I saw something float upwards, just a faint light, and then she was gone.  But what was unexpected was E's reaction.  She was so uplifted, she had such an emotional release, it made me really wonder what was really going on. She cried for a while, tears of joy and she was so greatful and felt so wonderful. It was amazing.  So I wonder,,,, this was her release? not a spirit released into the light.  It was like the weight of the world was lifted of her and just left. It was like witnessing something I've never seen.  She was completely full of life after.  It was spiritual and psychological???
It has to be connected. Or she would not have felt this?
