hello.  this is my first post to this forum.  last night i had a dream that began with me hanging out with a group of people - can't remember who they were..maybe some of my immediate family.  the lighting in this dream was dramatically dark.  somehow i found myself at a dark beach - like it was nighttime and moonlit - and i had a plastic bucket of sand that i placed in a "safe" place while i walked toward the waves lapping up on the shore.  as i got closer to the water and my feet got wet, the tide began to rise quickly to the point where i was back peddling very fast, to not get too wet...  the next thing i know, violent waves began to crash on shore around me (not on top of me).  it was almost as if i was dodging these 10 foot waves of water slapping down on shore around me... the force was so powerful that large sharks - probably 10 feet long - were being thrown into the air about 10 feet and landing around me - just missing me.  these sharks were big enough that i felt that if i got hit, i would be squashed and possibly killed.  as the sharks hit the ground, they seemed to fall in these deep sand crevasses that sort of just opened up out of nowhere.  after dodging waves and sharks, i fled to safety, running back to retrieve my bucket of sand that i'd placed in that "safe place"...  i was startled and feeling lucky to have escaped unharmed.

The beach - the meeting place of two worlds, land and sea, which may symbolize the conscious and subconscious, as well as the logical and emotional, realms of the human psyche. Perhaps there is something within your subconscious that the conscious mind needs to acknowledge. This dream may hint that you are not getting as much pleasure out of life as you could. It may show that you need a period of relaxation and rest. On the other hand, this dream may suggest that you take more interest in your work so that the daily grind becomes less of a trudge and more of an adventure.

Water is emotion, and because the tide and waves come up on you so suddenly suggest that something has happened suddenly in your waking life, and you feel that your emotions are threatening to 'get away' from you. Dodging these waves suggests you may be dodging your emotions as well.

Shark(s) - remember that the water in your dream is a symbol of your emotions and the subconscious.
Sharks are water-dwelling animals, and could represent unpleasant emotions or difficult and painful materials coming up from the subconscious, as well as your fears and problems in waking life. The shark also symbolizes feelings of anger, hostility, and fierceness.
If you are feeling some emotional upset, or are going through a difficult, painful, or unpleasant emotional period, then the sharks could be a symbol of what, or who, is causing the emotional danger, or upset.

Alternately, the shark may represent someone you see as greedy and unscrupulous. This person goes after what he or she wants with no regards to the well-being and sensitivity of others. The shark may also be an aspect of your own personality which exhibits these qualities.
Old dream interpretation books say that sharks may represent dishonest 'friends', or reflect financial troubles.

Crevasse/Trench - signifies that you feel suspicious of someone in your waking life. It could be your subconscious telling you that you need to be cautious with strangers, and others, who would have you believe they are your friend.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have you been betrayed by someone you thought was a friend?
Have you recently come into some money, or other good fortune, and everyone seems to have their hand out?
Is there a situation that is causing your emotions to feel out of control, or as though they might consume you?
Have you been offered an opportunity of some sort, but you're wary of it...or don't think it's on the 'up & up'?
Hope I could give you something to go on... Best of luck!
jayrae - your interpretation was spot on.  at the time of my dream, i was in the midst of feeling betrayed by a friend that i felt had no regard for anything or anyone around her...  she's someone who i love dearly and have given to unconditionally...  since my dream, i have been able to come to some emotional resolve by working things out with her, and making some of my emotional reactions to our situation known (yes, i was trying to pretend they didn't exist or otherwise talking myself out of acknowledging their existence).
i believe you have an amazing gift.  thank you for your generosity in sharing it with me.
