disturbing dream - can anyone interpret?

In the multitude of counselors there is safety & wisdom.

Hi, my name is christina and I am sharing this dream with a few people that I think may provide good counsel. This dream was not mine, it was someone who wishes to remain confidential. The person said the drem was very vivid.

Here goes:

Dream:

"I was walking through the streets at night in a big
city and came across this bridge. It was like it had
sidewalk areas where people could walk, like an
overpass, it was higher than other parts of the city.
As I got closer I walked down to the area under the
bridge. I came to the sewer entrance. Instead of a
manhole cover it was a ramp, an access way to a
subterranean area. This area actually had human
living quarters in it.

There was a commotion of people outside, including a
few men, and a woman wearing a nurses uniform. I went
under the bridge area and my original intent for being
there was because there was an ambulence and a
commotion. I saw there was an ambulence, and I
realized someone had been hurt. As I got closer and
entered in, I saw that there was some sort of cult
fraternity having a meeting. There was someone who
was hurt but apparently I think that person was
actually being sacrificed or possibly being
experimented on. The surroundings were very creepy.

When i first came in I met a man, an old man, in
ratty trench coat, fiddling with a machine, it was
brown. This man was fat and unsightly. I heard these
people chanting nearby. The old man was fiddling with
a machine that was brown.

He was asking me to adjust these parts, like a screw
and a coils some light bulbs and some other parts. I
asked him what the problem was and if he needed help
and he told me what to adjust on the machine. He was
very appreciative that I would help. He made some
vague comments about why I was down there. He asked
if I was there to witness "the great old ones".

I worked on the brown machine. The machine had two
light bulbs that needed to be fixed. If you turned
one light bulb the other one went on. I kept hearing
the chanting.

I knew something was wrong. I knew there was a ritual
going on the next room, and out of the corner of my
eye I could tell people were bent down over the
person, doing something.

This same old guy ....in the same scene, began to
throw up sea-water, brine, & a fish looking creature.
The fish had human features on it. It looked liked a
puffer fish. Other people were throwing up purple
vomit and it was flowing, and soaking onto the carpet.
The fat old man threw up another fish, and as he did
so, some water splashed on my arm and I was extremely
disgusted. As I looked out of the corner of my eye I
saw his shifty sideways glance. It seemed to me that
he did it on purpose. I tried to leave but they were
attempting to follow me out.

I fled, and as I turned to where the bridge ended
there were steel beams. As I left there were holes
in the street. I had to jump from one area to the
other. The people were coming after me, they almost
got me. People lunged at me,but then I woke up.

I felt like I escaped the worst of it.

Wow....nicely detailed.
Ok...I broke it down, piece by piece. I tried to keep it somewhat in order of mention.

"city" - thought to be representative of 'the self'.

"a high bridge" - a transition... crossing from one way of life to another....this could also be symbolic of your wanting to rise above your emotional difficulties..

"sewer entrance" - something that may be necessary, but you view it as distasteful.

"subterranean living quarters" - may symbolize something you feel is being 'hidden' from you. This may represent something that you need in your 'waking life' - probably something you're not allowed to say or do.

"crowd of people" - you’re not actually 'involved' with the crowd, you may feel as if you’re "on the outside looking in" with regard to what’s going on in your immediate circle of those around you in your 'waking' life.

"nurse" - Sometimes nurses are seen as angels. Aside from the spiritual component, nurses often function as extras in other medical or sickness dreams. Have you been feeling 'under the weather' as of late?

"ambulance" - your unconscious mind may by attempting to tell you something that you don't want to deal with consciously...this symbol may be pointing to some urgent situation in your life. Also, pay attention to your physical body and see if your health is an issue. Do you have an intense fear of becoming ill, or contracting a serious disease? Are you having to go overseas,...someplace you may need immunizations in order to go?

"they were hurting someone" (causing injury) - you may be feeling that there is someone who would like to discredit you, or make you look bad. Or, someone who you feel does not have your best interests in mind. Or is someone pushing you to make a decision you're not ready to make?

"sacrifice" - symbolizes the things we do, or give up for others. But when we do too much for others and not enough for ourselves, we are left feeling neglected. This 'sacrifice' you perceived in your dream, may be suggesting to you that you need to prioritize. Eliminate things in your life that are not necessary and continuously drag you down. Also, consider that whatever is constantly requiring you to make personal sacrifices may not be in your best interest or good for your health or happiness.

"old man" - Old people in dreams represent wisdom and maturity. They may appear in our dreams in times of confusion or lack of direction...or when we need help in decision-making. If the old man appeared frustrated (His asking for your help), suggests that unhappy thoughts and emotions will drag you down if you let them. That he was slovenly further suggests you're unhappy with something or someone that is important to you.

"wearing a trench coat" - Protection.....covering up emotions. Have you been feeling defensive lately? Like people have been invading your personal 'space'...? Have you been wanting to say something to someone, but you're 'biting your tongue'...?

"brown" - a somber color which is associated with the earth, dirt, or soil. Brown could also represent a feeling of low spirits or depression. It may represent things in their "barest" form, and it's interpretation may be an encouragement for you to add some light and depth into your daily life.

"machine" - suggests that you may be facing something which is causing a lot of anxiety.
Machines also suggest that you may feel anxious about making an emotional connection, or you feel that you're losing touch with someone.

"light bulbs" - a sign that you are raising your consciousness through awareness. Light always symbolizes a guiding force. Dreaming of light/light bulbs could be that you are aware of the path you should take.

"chanting" - symbolizes repetition. A continuation of something....something you can't stop thinking about. Or someone constantly pressuring you.

"vomit" - Vomiting in a dream may represent those things in life that cause you emotional stress and repulse you. This symbol suggests that you are rejecting a thought, idea, feeling, or circumstance, and you feel that a cleansing is required. Examine your waking life, and try to identify matters that would cause such a strong reaction.

"seawater" - Water generally symbolize the emotions and the unconscious. In the way you viewed it, it would seem that you are troubled by some of your recent emotions. Your extreme disgust at some of the 'water' landing on you would again, point to your troubled emotions.

"purple vomit" - Purple is usually the color of royalty, high rank, or dignity. It is a strong color that can not be ignored. It could symbolize a higher status in one's own circle...increased social life, or the desire of increased status.
To some, purple has spiritual connotations...the Catholic Church uses it at funerals and around Easter time. It represents spiritual and personal transformation. Purple could also represent higher consciousness and spiritual protection. Purple is also the color of the crown Chakra. When interpreting this color consider all of the details in the dream and try to make connections between the above mentioned-ideas and your current issues.
Being that it was vomit that was purple could signify that although it would mean a higher status, you may have to do something which may 'go against your grain'...something you don't want to do.

"fish had human features" - fish may represent messages from our unconscious and indicate to us how well we 'navigate' through our emotional waters, but disfigured fish would suggest the opposite. That you are having trouble with emotions, and are feeling confused.

"holes in the street" - obstacles (real or imagined)you can see ahead of you....obvious rough going.

"they were attempting to follow" (chasing)... "And "I fled" ....represents current tensions and issues rather than actual people. This usually shows the level of stress you have at the moment. You might be trying to avoid something either in your waking life or in your inner self.

"I escaped the worst of it" - The need to break away from unpleasant people or circumstances in the your life....liberation from something in your life...or the opposite, running away from your problems instead of facing them. Knowing full well, that sooner or later you will have to face it.

Is there something 'major' going on in your life...something you see as a 'life-altering' event? Something that has you totally confused and/or completely terrified?
Something that is causing intense stress and a lot of extreme emotion?
It could be anything. A new job with more responsibility in a new town. A relationship where the question of sex could be entering the picture and you don't feel ready for it. Or even the scare factor of an unplanned pregnancy.

It would be to your best interests to find a place where you can have some 'down time'. Spend quality time with a friend, or loved ones in a quiet place. You probably already know what path to take, but need to muster up the courage and strength to follow it.
